Three stories this week, one lesson: every war runs on ammunition, and the quartermasters just spoke.

Start in the Gulf. After thirteen nights of strikes, Washington suddenly rediscovered diplomacy, conveniently, right as leaks revealed the Pentagon’s stock of missile interceptors running thin and the long end of the bond market creaking. Oil dropped 8%, stocks exhaled, pundits celebrated statesmanship. I see a reload pause. Presidents preach peace when the racks run low and portfolios bleed.

Wall Street is fighting its own war, the AI buildout, and its ammunition is borrowed money. Nearly half a trillion dollars of fresh AI debt this year, and the lenders are twitching: the cost of insuring hyperscaler bonds just hit record highs. When Nvidia dangles a $250 billion backstop so its star customer can keep buying Nvidia chips, the financing has become a balloon inflating itself.

Enter the pin. Beijing floated CXMT, its homegrown memory champion, into a 470% debut and a $500 billion valuation minted in one afternoon, while rolling out domestic chipmaking machines that gnaw at ASML’s monopoly. Washington’s export bans turned into Beijing’s training program.

So count the magazines: interceptor racks, credit spreads, IPO war chests. Whoever reloads cheapest keeps shooting.

A Genuine Coin Toss at the Fed

Wednesday brings the rarest thing in modern central banking: a decision nobody can front-run. Futures assign roughly a one-in-three chance of a hike; if that holds, whatever the Fed delivers ranks among the biggest meeting-day surprises in decades. Under Warsh, the old blackout-period press leaks have vanished. Our base case: a hawkish hold, at least one dissent, and a press conference built to keep everyone guessing.

Accounting’s Kindest Year

The five biggest AI spenders will pour roughly $725 billion into capital projects this year, yet only about $211 billion lands on 2026 income statements as depreciation. The rest sits parked on balance sheets, flattering profits while cash drains. Morgan Stanley now models $1.27 trillion of capex for 2027. If chips age faster than the books assume, the deferred bill arrives early, and heavy.

Oil: Paper Panic, Physical Patience

Crude’s 8% Monday plunge celebrated the strike pause, yet the physical market never joined the party. Dated Brent still commands over $90 in backwardation, refined products barely budged, and just eight commodity vessels crossed Hormuz on Sunday. Saudi barrels now detour a month around Africa while tankers at Yanbu sail dark. Futures traders relaxed; shipowners and insurers plainly haven’t.

Expensive and Cheap, Simultaneously

Global equity value now equals 137% of world GDP, flirting with records. Yet the Nasdaq trades at 21.8 times forward earnings, a 10% discount to its own decade average, while the S&P’s price-to-earnings-growth ratio sits at a thirty-year low. Both camps hold real evidence. The entire debate compresses into one question: do you believe the earnings, given the depreciation math above?

One Hundred Days to the Ballot

The midterm countdown reads roughly 100 days, and history says the S&P grinds sideways from August through Election Day, then improves. Affordability now drives policy: Washington reopens Mexican cattle imports August 24 to tame beef prices, a margin lifeline for battered meatpackers Tyson and JBS. Expect healthcare, crypto rules, and residential solar to trade as political footballs into November. Position for chop, harvest the relief.

THE WEEK: Five Days, No Cover

The gauntlet opens today with a $44 billion 7-year Treasury sale. Wednesday pairs the Fed decision with Microsoft and Meta after the bell. Thursday stacks the first Q2 GDP print, core PCE inflation, and the Bank of England before Apple and Amazon report. Friday finishes with the Bank of Japan, eurozone CPI, and China’s PMIs. Thin summer liquidity amplifies every landing.

Record-low stock correlation has sedated the index: single names thrash while the S&P naps inside its summer cage, leaving index volatility artificially cheap. We rent the nap and own the wake-up.

The structure sells September’s 725 put and 745 call and buys the same strikes in October, harvesting daily decay while staying long volatility. History says midterm years turn choppy from August onward; the October legs live inside that pre-election build. Breakevens span the entire summer range.

Every bull market runs on invisible insurance. This one carries three policies, and two just lapsed.

Policy one: the Musk put. The belief that anything he touches only goes up. SpaceX, the largest IPO in history, now trades below its issue price after insiders unloaded on retail, with an August unlock set to triple the float. Faith, meet gravity.

Policy two: the scarcity put. The belief that compute stays rare forever, so the trillion-dollar data-center spree can’t miss. Then Kimi K3 dropped: a Chinese model brushing the frontier on a fraction of the hardware, selling intelligence at dollar-store prices. The country that flooded the world with plastic toys has moved on to cognition, and the capex cathedral suddenly needs an appraisal.

Policy three: the Pentagon put. The only one still trading. Nine straight nights of strikes on Iran, Hormuz traffic down to a trickle, a presidential choice between a ten-day truce and full-scale war due any day, and equities yawn, because everyone assumes the White House folds before oil breaks the S&P. Maybe. But when the market’s last backstop is one man’s pain threshold, you have quietly become the underwriter, and nobody pays you premium.

Tariffs, Second Front

While Hormuz hogs the headlines, Washington slapped an additional 50% tariff on selected Canadian goods, USMCA (NAFTA) products included, effective August 19, alongside aluminium tariff discounts for onshoring pledges. Ottawa talks retaliation and treaty modernization. Bonus round: reports suggest the administration may restrict Chinese AI models while Beijing weighs export controls of its own.

Great Numbers, Nothing Left to Buy

US banks just posted record 17% corporate loan growth, a 19% return on tangible equity, and squeaky-clean credit, while the Philly Fed outlook hit a five-year high. Morgan Stanley even argues this cycle rhymes with 1997 and 2005, with room left to run. Yet TSM and ASML both delivered stellar beats and promptly sold off. When perfection gets faded, the debate has moved from earnings to multiples.

The Refinery Tells the Truth

Crude chops around the low $80s, yet crack spreads sit at record highs, heating oil and gasoil are breaking out, and European natural gas presses back toward its wartime peaks. Treasuries have started tracking refined products, the stuff that actually feeds inflation. Europe faces a narrow window to refill storage before winter, with Russia holding the valve. Goldman sees Brent above $120 if Hormuz stays shut into Q4.

Britain Tries Something Old

Andy Burnham took Downing Street and surprised everyone by handing the Treasury to John Healey. The program: subsidized energy bills, reindustrialization through public procurement, more council housing; a self-declared new economic model. Gilt yields jumped on arrival. The backdrop makes it spicier: roughly $70–80 billion of take-privates already hollowed out the FTSE 250. Fresh fiscal ambition meets a shrinking equity base.

THE WEEK: Macro Whispers, Micro Shouts

With the Fed silent ahead of July 29 and PCE due next week, the calendar leans European: UK jobs Tuesday, UK inflation Wednesday, a hawkish-tilted ECB Thursday, Japanese CPI and global flash PMIs Friday. Sprinkle in ZEW, weekly ADP, and a $13 billion 20-year auction Wednesday. The real fireworks come from earnings, Alphabet and Tesla Wednesday, both priced for roughly 6% swings, Intel near 13%.

Tactics for this Tape

Trade smaller, hedge smarter. With index volatility artificially cheap, owning optionality beats selling it; protective puts and call-funded collars cost less than they should. Skip the leveraged ETF casino, let earnings prove the AI story before re-grossing, and keep dry powder for the moment correlation snaps. In a gamma-free market, patience pays better than heroics.

TUESDAY TARGET: Brazil (EWZ)

Yes, Brazil again! I don’t pick favorites, the Daily Doze heat map does. Our new quant monster list flags the ticker, the strategy, the whole setup. I just sanity-check the chart.

And the chart plays along: EWZ bled 15% off the April highs, spent six weeks building a floor near 34, and now sits wedged in a tangle of moving averages around 35.50. Tired sellers below, trapped bagholders above; nobody’s winning that fight soon. So we sell the standoff: 31-day iron condor, roughly $1.50 in the pocket, break-evens parked outside the entire summer range. Theta collects rent while Brazil argues with itself.

But hear me: quant backing improves the odds, never removes the risk. The moment those break-evens stop working for you, drop it. No ego, no averaging down, next trade.

Two rival gangs are shaking down the same street. Tehran hawked safe passage through Hormuz for a token 1%. Washington spent spring branding any Iranian fee an outrage, then rolled up with the bigger racket: blockade back on, escorts at 20% of cargo value, plus a street name: Guardian Angel of the Strait. Nice tanker you’ve got there; shame if something happened to it. Fifty years of free protection, then the world’s policeman slides an invoice across the table.

Both mobs guard a street the traffic is deserting. The UAE quit OPEC and pumped a record 4.1 million barrels a day, much of it loading beyond the chokepoint. Dubai is pouring concrete on a port built to dodge Hormuz entirely; seven pipelines are under construction; Goldman figures half the strait’s oil finds another route by 2028. Every missile fired over that waterway finances the detour around it.

Equity land runs the same racket. Cap-weighting turned the emerging-markets index into an 83% Asian-AI toll road, marching every diversified dollar through a Korean memory chokepoint. Friday the bypass opened, SK Hynix listed straight into New York, seven times oversubscribed. By Monday: Hynix’s worst Seoul session ever, Kospi’s third-biggest drop since Lehman, partly traffic switching to the new road. The booth stands; the customers walk. Rent peaks before the road around it opens.

BofA’s Reversal Trade

BofA’s strategist names the biggest possible second-half surprise: an AI capex cut, forced when bond buyers stop funding cash-flow-negative hyperscalers. His trade for that world reverses this year’s winner, long software and Mag7, short semiconductors, since spenders keep their cash while suppliers lose their orders. Watch Meta’s late-July report; any hint of spending discipline flips the entire complex.

Apple, the Crowded Bunker

While AI names bleed, Apple printed fresh records and sits within 5% of overtaking Nvidia as the world’s largest company. July’s 13-point outperformance versus the Nasdaq 100 would mark its best month in fifteen years, at a 65% premium to the S&P: also a fifteen-year extreme. Every other Mag7 name trades in double-digit drawdown. When defense itself gets this crowded, safety starts carrying beta.

Washington’s $100 Ceiling

The real debate shifted from whether the strait is open to whose permission a tanker needs. With midterms in November, the White House has every incentive to prevent sustained $100 oil, which argues for weekend escalations followed by weekday de-escalation. Base case: Brent stuck in a $75–85 band. Watch refined products instead; tight diesel and gasoline feed inflation, and therefore rates, harder than spot crude.

Warsh, Record Shorts, and a 2.40% Tripwire

The new chair testifies today and tomorrow into a market that swung from pricing 50 basis points of cuts to roughly 40 of hikes, with hedge funds holding near-record shorts in SOFR futures, a bet that now needs an actual hike to keep paying. Meanwhile ten-year real yields hit 2.34%, the highest since April 2025; BTIG marks 2.40% as where equities start hurting. A Fed on hold squeezes everything.

THE WEEK: Inflation, Warsh, Banks and Chips

This week concentrates several market-moving tests into a few sessions. CPI and PPI will show whether higher energy costs are already leaking into inflation, while Kevin Warsh’s testimony will shape expectations for the Fed. Bank earnings offer an early read on credit quality, and results from ASML, TSMC and Netflix will test both the AI spending cycle and consumer resilience.

Tactics for this Tape

Respect the uptrend, distrust its breadth. Keep core longs on tighter stops, lean into the rotation, energy, financials, heavy-asset compounders, and own index protection while it’s priced for a windless afternoon. Then let today’s CPI, the bank prints, and Friday’s expiration come to you. This tape pays patience and punishes heroes.

This week we publish EWY short volatility. Korea gets played while it’s hot, fingers on the pulse until they burn. Monday’s near-9% Kospi flush, the third-worst since Lehman, pumped EWY option premium once again to crash prices, and our ⓶ BOILER ROOM screen in the new Daily Doze calculates far less expected movement than the market now charges.

For a decade, Wall Street clapped like a trained seal every time a tech giant shredded its own shares. Buybacks built nothing and hired nobody, yet since 2000 they’ve supplied essentially all net demand for US equities. Now Microsoft, Meta & the other villains pour real money into real capacity, and the market treats them like teenagers who maxed out dad’s credit card. Reward the shredders, flog the builders. Charming incentive system.

Right on cue, the rescue squad arrives: BofA, Morgan Stanley, Goldman, JPMorgan, HSBC. All pitching the beaten-down spenders as the gutsy contrarian play, all in the same breath. A contrarian idea endorsed by every sales desk on the street is consensus with better marketing. And crowded lifeboats sink fastest.

Bond traders run the same rear-view logic: pricing Fed hikes off an inflation print pumped up by wartime oil, while wage growth, the signal that has led every inflation turn since 1985, topped out four years ago and real wages just dipped below zero. Disinflation is loading in the background while the anxious prairie dog insures against last month’s shock.

Hedge Funds Left Before the Fireworks

Goldman’s prime brokerage shows funds net sold US equities three straight weeks and dumped tech for a fourth, the most on record recently, while retail traded 65% above last year’s pace and long-only inflows hit an all-time monthly high of $180 billion. Cash allocations at private clients sit at generational lows. The smart money handed its inventory to the enthusiastic money.

The Broadening Gets Real?

Morgan Stanley’s Mike Wilson’s rotation call could have legs: out of chip stocks, into hyperscalers, consumer discretionary goods, transports, and biotech. The logic is straightforward; chips depend on hyperscaler checkbooks, and those checkbooks are being reviewed. Biotech historically annualizes near 20% returns when rates are elevated and falling.

Warsh Buries the Dot Plot

The new Fed chair is dismantling forward guidance itself. Waller calls it useful only at times; the June minutes will reveal how deep the philosophy shift runs. Markets built entire strategies around telegraphed policy paths. An adaptive Fed that moves fast without warning changes option pricing around every FOMC date; event risk premiums deserve to be structurally higher now.

Japan’s Bond Market Forces the Issue

Twenty-year JGB yields just printed a record 3.816%, they were zero in 2019. Japanese bankruptcies blamed on the weak yen hit an all-time high, concentrated among importers with no pricing power. The BOJ faces an ugly choice: keep tolerating currency collapse or tighten into a fragile economy.

Saudi Blinks First

Saudi Aramco slashed its Asia selling price by $11 per barrel, the largest cut in at least 26 years, as OPEC+ adds 188,000 daily barrels from August. Hormuz traffic runs near 30% of pre-war levels, yet crude sits under $70 with Brent in contango. Supply competition is overwhelming geopolitical risk premium. Cheap crude, though, hasn’t reached the pump: product markets stay tight.

THE WEEK: Minutes, Memory, Missiles

Wednesday’s FOMC minutes headline the calendar; the first glimpse inside Kevin Warsh’s inaugural meeting as Chair and the decision to scrap forward guidance. Fed speakers Williams and Logan follow Thursday, alongside China inflation data.

Taiwan Semiconductor posts June revenue Friday, and SK Hynix launches its $28 billion Nasdaq ADR listing. At the NATO summit in Turkey, Russia-Ukraine escalation tops the agenda after fresh strikes on refineries and tankers.

Tactics for this Tape

Watch the rotation, the bounce could fade into consolidation. Momentum remains crowded at the 92nd percentile despite the unwind, so only swing trade semis until volatility compresses.

Institutional flow agrees: a large buyer just scooped 10-year Treasury calls expiring right after the July 14 inflation report. If disinflation forces hike pricing out, long-end yields fall and TLT grinds through 88. Defined risk, three months of runway.

Picture the worst case every analyst circled on the calendar: Hormuz, the planet’s busiest oil artery, choked shut for nearly four months. Oil opened the year at $70. It sits at $70 today. The doomsday premium melted, and everyone who panic-bought crude as insurance handed it back within hours. Strangling the world’s most important chokepoint moved… wait… eeehhmm, right: nothing!

Here’s the thread I can’t stop pulling. Almost nobody is steering what they claim to steer. Warsh struts around vowing to crush inflation, yet most price swings come from oil, food, and supply shocks; stuff no rate hike can reach. And Beijing cured its property collapse by quietly rerouting bank loans from apartments to EV and solar factories; the housing bust never healed, it just dropped out of the headlines, and now that the credit hose is being clamped, it’s creeping back.

Three players, one shared delusion: that motion and control are the same thing. They rarely are.

Global attention pivots to a highly compressed, holiday-shortened trading calendar culminating in Thursday’s accelerated U.S. payrolls report. Traders will intensely scrutinize Fed Chair Warsh’s appearance at the ECB’s Sintra forum for any policy clues. With crucial domestic labor data, ISM manufacturing prints, and Eurozone inflation readings hitting a liquidity-drained summer market ahead of America’s 250th birthday, expect outsized price reactions.

Preserve your mental capital, deliberately trade smaller sizes, and wait for the fat pitch before deploying fresh cash.

We remain in observation mode. Selling rich premium into overbought conditions could offer a wide profitability window. Only for rock stars.

BB staged a parabolic melt-up to $12.48, keeping implied volatility elevated. One could exploit this euphoria by structuring a 52-day Iron Condor. Shorting the 12/13 inner strikes and buying 8/17 wings. This builds a forgiving profit tent with relatively wide breakevens. We need momentum to exhaust into sideways chop, letting time decay melt the pricey premium.
