Here is a thought the chasers keep missing while they pile into the next shiny chip: this whole AI rally is really one long hunt for scarcity. GPUs ran hot, so the mob went looking for the next thing in short supply: power, then memory, and now, tiny ceramic capacitors that cost pennies. Each time a bottleneck loosens, the stampede drills down into a smaller, more obscure part to keep the scarcity story breathing. Call it a treadmill: you always need a fresh bottleneck, because yesterday’s always gets solved.

Also, watch where the boring money walks. Buffett’s heir grabs a homebuilder. Diller stalks a casino. Another billionaire circles Caesars. They are buying the kind of scarce a server farm can’t copy: a buildable plot, a hotel, a gaming floor on the Strip. You can’t print or paste more of those.

Could be a tell. Manufactured scarcity evaporates the moment the music stops, because it was always a game of find the next part. Real scarcity just sits there, stubborn and dull. And the post-mania script rarely changes: the unloved, left-behind names tend to lead on the way out?

Earnings Did the Heavy Lifting

Before you dismiss this as pure bubble, note the engine: roughly two-thirds of the rally since ChatGPT launched is explained by actual earnings growth, not multiple expansion. Last quarter delivered 27% year-on-year profit growth, and the S&P’s P/E actually slipped from 22x to 21x. The E is doing the work. That makes this stretch harder to short than the doomers admit.

Software’s Comeback

The software ETF (IGV) has rocketed roughly 45% off its April lows, reclaiming its 200-day average and posting its best month in around 25 years. Jensen Huang’s pushback on SaaS is dead fears, plus better-than-feared earnings from Snowflake and others, lit the fuse. After a move like this, though, it sits at heavy resistance and looks badly overbought.

Alphabet Reaches for the Tin

Google’s parent stunned the market with an $80 billion equity raise to fund AI capex, including a $40 billion at-the-market (ATM) program normally reserved for meme stocks, plus a discounted $10 billion deal with Berkshire. Tellingly, much of the ATM proceeds will cover employee-equity tax bills. A multi-trillion-dollar giant tapping retail to pay its taxes tells you where free cash flow is going.

The Bond Market’s Quiet Warning

Treasuries sold off as oil climbed, with the 30-year hovering around 5.00% and rate-hike odds for 2026 jumping to roughly 75%. Note the reversal: the conversation has flipped from rate cuts to rate hikes. A packed June calendar, jobs data, inflation prints, a new Fed chair’s first meeting, means any bounce in bonds keeps meeting fresh selling pressure.

THE WEEK: Event Risk Overload

A loaded calendar lands all at once. ISM Manufacturing already beat on Monday; JOLTS job openings hit today, followed by ADP and ISM Services on Wednesday, before Friday’s main event, May nonfarm payrolls, with consensus near 145,000 and unemployment around 4.2%. Add Broadcom earnings Wednesday as the semiconductor bellwether, plus Hewlett Packard Enterprise and CrowdStrike for read-throughs across hardware and software. Geopolitics stays the wild- or boringcard throughout.

Tactics for this Tape

Stay long with discipline, not abandon. Protection is dirty cheap, so own some, simple index puts cost little, and a small VIX call hedge guards the correlation snap-back nobody is pricing. Trim the most stretched winners, especially semis, into strength rather than chasing the final 10%. Keep dry powder for the unloved laggards. The melt-up can run further; just don’t be the last one holding it.

TUESDAY TARGET: Korea (EWY)

EWY has gone parabolic on SK Hynix and the AI memory frenzy, the cleanest proxy for the most crowded speculation on the planet. We are not stupid enough to short a parabola outright (that’s how shorts get carried out on a stretcher). Instead, a double calendar: sell the front-month June options, own the July ones. We win if Korea simply cools a little and keeps grinding higher after a healthy retrace, roughly 190 and 220 into June expiry, letting rich front-month premium decay while our longer leg survives the June catalyst minefield.

A few warnings. Price is flying pre-market, so the strikes may need adjusting once the bell rings. A crash in implied vol is a real risk and can make this one a sweaty hold, but it’s a short trade, things move fast, and you’ll be out before it can sting. Spreads aren’t the tightest, though Korean iShares liquidity is finally deep(ish) after years in the wilderness. And remember: we are not playing Korea here, we are playing two companies, both reporting earnings after our monthly expiries.

Meanwhile, another supply shock of 2026 is unfolding quietly in Hefei, where ChangXin Memory just posted 719% revenue growth and started shipping DRAM into Corsair sticks selling across Europe. The twenty-year Samsung-Hynix-Micron cartel that has silently jacked up PPI for every server and gaming rig is finally cracking. Hyperscaler valuations assume the cartel keeps its pricing power; once Chinese DDR5 floods the market at half price, Meta and Microsoft margins fatten while Korea Inc. takes the bullet.

Same week, different venue. Buried inside Trump’s Memorial Day post sits a play wilder than the Iran headline suggests: Saudi, Qatar, Pakistan, Egypt, and Jordan all pushed into the Abraham Accords, with Iran invited too. Watch the screens this week and you’ll see investors holding their breath for the Trump-Xi handshake in Beijing, oil traders pricing the next Iran headline, and Wall Street betting Bibi will hand Trump a clean victory lap. Look at the side tables instead.

Netanyahu went on 60 Minutes and casually told millions of Americans that Trump committed, to him, that U.S. forces would physically remove Iranian uranium. When pressed on how, Bibi grinned and said he’d dodge the question a second and third time. A foreign prime minister scripting American military policy, live on CBS.

Meanwhile, CBS reported that Pakistan, the neutral mediator shuttling messages between Washington and Tehran, quietly parked Iranian military aircraft, including an Iranian RC-130, on its airbase to shield them from American strikes. Islamabad denies it. The reporters stand by it. Either way, the peace broker may have been hiding the enemy’s planes.

And Xi is hosting Trump in Beijing knowing both men need a photo-op more than a deal. Expect soybeans, Boeing orders, a few tech crumbs, and zero structural change. Markets will rip on the optics.

The Gamma Bonfire

The S&P just printed five intraday records in five days, and the engine is mechanical, not fundamental. Last Wednesday, traders bought $2.6 trillion notional in S&P calls, the most call options ever transacted in a single session. Dealers are short those calls, so they have to keep buying stock to hedge. Every tick higher forces more buying. Beautiful while it lasts. Brutal when it stops.

Gold’s Quiet Reserve Coup

Gold is now roughly 30% of global central bank reserves. The dollar is 40%. The gap is closing fast. The driver is not goldbug debasement fantasies; it’s emerging market central banks watching Russia’s reserves get frozen in 2022 and accumulating physical, sanction-proof assets. Deutsche Bank’s framework points to gold continuing its climb. If EM allocations move toward 40%, prices could push toward $8,000.

China Tech Gets Its Handshake

Trump and Xi can probably produce a market-friendly photo without solving the structural fight. That may still be enough. China tech remains lightly owned, short interest is meaningful, and prior leader meetings often removed overhangs for a while. A few purchase promises, softer tariff language, or tech concessions could light up KWEB before anyone admits they wanted the trade.

THE WEEK: CPI, PPI, and the Trump-Xi Optics

Today’s April CPI is the anchor. Goldman expects headline at +0.58% and core at +0.31%, both running hot from the Iran war and a one-off shelter quirk from October’s shutdown. Wednesday brings PPI, which feeds the Fed’s preferred PCE measure. Thursday delivers Retail Sales and a wall of Fed speakers. Trump lands in Beijing Thursday for the Xi summit. Powell’s term ends Friday. Plenty of room for fireworks.

Tactics for this Tape

Stay long. Stay hedged. Don’t fight the gamma squeeze, but don’t trust it either. Hedges are historically cheap, and the asymmetry favors owning them. The flock has a stubborn habit of pricing static worlds. Hormuz closes, so oil must crater everything. AI arrives, so jobs must vanish. Both stories sell clicks, sell newsletters, sell fund flows. Both share the same flaw: they assume systems sit still while shocks happen to them.

Look at oil. Prices spiked, then the rerouting started. The UAE quietly drifted out of OPEC’s grip. Saudi pipelines push barrels around the chokepoint to the Red Sea. Insurance underwriters in London call more shots in the Gulf than Tehran’s threats do. America keeps cranking out crude and refined product like it’s been doing this for decades, because it has. Roughly 80% of the disrupted volumes already found another route. The futures curve itself, sitting in steep backwardation, is shouting that the squeeze is temporary. The crowd can’t hear it over its own panic.

Now look at AI. The displacement story gets recycled every quarter, while hiring in software, engineering, accounting, and customer service keeps drifting higher. Jevons Paradox, dressed in 2026 clothing: when something gets cheaper to do, we do more of it. The trade is simple. Every time the crowd screams shortage, ask what the elastic system on the other side is already quietly building.

Hormuz Goes From Stalemate to Strike

The weekend’s Project Freedom promised safe passage through the Strait. Within hours, missiles hit Fujairah, drones probed UAE air defenses, a South Korean cargo ship took fire, and oil leapt nearly $5 on WTI. Iran swore it had no plan to target Abu Dhabi, then promised lessons the Emiratis “will never forget.” Diplomacy still exists on paper. On the water, the war just widened.

30-Year Cracks 5% Again

Treasury yields ripped higher Monday: 2-year up 11bps, 30-year settling above 5%, the highest print since July 2025. Rate-hike odds for next year jumped to roughly 80%, a clean reversal of the cut narrative we entered 2026 with. Higher oil, sticky inflation expectations, and Wednesday’s refunding announcement loom. Bond volatility is already telling equities something equities haven’t priced yet.

Korea’s Quiet Bubble

The KOSPI is up 171% over twelve months, trading 60% above its 200-day moving average. SK Hynix has left earth’s gravity. Call option open interest exploded last week, textbook late-stage mania behavior. Korea is now a bigger equity market than the UK, having lapped Britain in roughly eighteen months. Beautiful, parabolic, and exactly the kind of chart that ends with a sound.

Silicon Valley Goes Kinetic

Eric Schmidt’s Project Eagle has shipped over 10,000 Merops interceptors to US troops in the Middle East, $15,000 drones knocking down million-dollar Iranian threats. Silicon Valley spent twenty years optimizing ad targeting. It now builds kill chains. Capital is rotating fast into onshoring, rare earths, robotics, satellites, and counter-drone systems, the industrial complex everyone called boring just became the growth story of the decade.

THE WEEK: Debt Dumps and Payroll Roulette

Wednesday’s Quarterly Refunding Announcement is the marquee event, watch for the words at least disappearing from coupon guidance. Friday delivers Non-Farm Payrolls, where consensus-busting strength would slam the door on cuts and crack the long bond. ISM Services, JOLTS, and Wednesday’s Treasury auctions fill the gaps. ECB’s Lagarde and Lane speak Tuesday alongside Fed’s Bowman and Barr. Earnings: AMD leads, with Pfizer, PayPal, Shopify, and HSBC behind it.

Tactics for this Tape

With systematic buying exhausted and market breadth collapsing, holding unhedged long positions carries massive risks. Shift focus toward defined-risk volatility structures. Deploy e.g. index put debit spreads, or VIX call debit spreads, to cheaply hedge the inevitable momentum unwind. Pair this defensive posture with hard assets and energy security plays. Avoid the dangerously crowded, over-leveraged technology consensus.

TUESDAY TARGET: JetBlue Airways (JBLU)

Bureaucrats blocked the JetBlue-Spirit merger. The direct result? Spirit went bankrupt and completely liquidated. Now, JetBlue swoops in to absorb Spirit’s abandoned South Florida routes, capturing outsized market share and real pricing power without writing a single M&A check.

We are targeting 255 DTE. We use a longer duration for this directional debit trade. This gives Wall Street ample time to digest JetBlue’s sudden capacity grab and the margin expansion that should follow in upcoming forward guidance. We structure this as an aggressive out-of-the-money debit call spread, gaining highly leveraged upside with strictly defined risk.

The fuel-cost overhang from elevated Brent is the one variable that could mute the move, so size accordingly.

Two of the most powerful CFOs on the planet are running the same playbook this morning, and almost nobody has noticed. Sarah Friar at OpenAI just admitted to her board she is nervous her company can’t pay the $1.5 trillion it pledged in future compute spending, because revenue keeps missing targets. Scott Bessent at Treasury is busy dangling unlimited dollar liquidity to the UAE, Korea, and anyone else willing to keep holding greenbacks while America runs its war. Same architecture, different floor; promise tomorrow’s money to keep today’s buyers buying, and pray the music plays one more lap.

Difficult to connect the dots. Semis are up 18 sessions in a row, the SOX sits 50% above its 200-day average, a dislocation last seen at the dotcom peak in 2000, and the entire AI tape assumes Altman’s trillion-dollar pledge is bankable cash. Then Microsoft quietly tore up its OpenAI revenue share on the very day Friar’s panic leaked. The hyperscaler shareholders sit on their hands while the chip recipients fly. Pension rebalancing into month-end now estimates roughly $24 billion in US equities for sale, one of the largest non-quarterly sell estimates Goldman has ever modelled. CTAs have stopped buying after adding around $170 billion globally this month. The mechanical bid that powered April’s melt-up just turned into a mechanical offer right as earnings risk peaks.

Microsoft Quietly Restructures Its OpenAI Bet

Microsoft amended its OpenAI deal Monday: no more revenue share paid to OpenAI, the license becomes non-exclusive, and OpenAI can ship products on any cloud. Translation: the company that knows OpenAI’s books better than anyone is rewriting the relationship the same week Sarah Friar’s funding panic leaked. When the closest partner steps back, pay attention.

The Capex Question Nobody Wants to Ask

Consensus already bakes in over $600 billion of 2026 capex across Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta. The trick: the market needs that number to keep going up, because flat capex with rising input costs effectively means a slowdown. Add Thursday’s critical core PCE inflation print and advance GDP metrics, and you have a perfect storm. Complacent markets remain entirely unprepared for any unexpected stagflationary surprises or sudden corporate spending hesitation.

For four decades, the mullahs sold the same insurance policy to the world: mess with us, and we shut the Strait. Every pundit bought the pitch. Every energy strategist priced the premium. Every Western capital wrote it into their risk model. Then Iran pulled the trigger, and discovered the rope was tied to their own neck.

Run the numbers. 90% of Iran’s crude exports and 60% of its government revenues flow through that 21-mile stretch of water. Shut it down and Tehran bleeds over $300 million a day while Washington shrugs from a country that now outproduces Russia and Saudi combined as the world’s largest oil and LNG exporter. The chokepoint chokes its architect.

China, Iran’s loyal discount buyer, isn’t smiling either. Beijing was feasting on Iranian crude at $10-$12 a barrel below market, piping cheap sanctioned oil into its plastics machine. That pipe snapped. Now they’re paying Arabian Light premiums, their petrochemicals tethered to American ethane shipments, and gas at $5.60 a gallon against a $17k average wage. Xi arrives at the May summit with a losing hand.

Geography stayed the same. The leverage map got rewritten overnight.

Nasdaq’s 13-session winning streak, the longest stretch since 1992, finally broke on Monday. Coincidence? Not when it pairs with call-volume records, dealer gamma flipping short on any further rally, and single-stock skew collapsing to multi-year lows. Streaks of this magnitude historically resolve higher over 12 months, but the near-term digestion phase could get messy.

Cook Walks, Ternus Inherits

Tim Cook steps aside September 1st. Under his reign, Apple’s market cap went from $350 billion to $4 trillion, a ten-bagger built on share buybacks while revenue barely four-bagged. John Ternus, a hardware lifer, now inherits a company coasting on brand prestige. Whether he actually innovates or simply keeps the repurchase authorization humming is the real test.

Wall Street’s Bull Trap Chorus

When Goldman’s John Flood, Rich Privorotsky, and BofA’s Michael Hartnett all publicly warn of a bull trap in the same week, contrarians start circling. The consensus bear call at market highs usually means the rally extends just enough to burn the late shorts before the real crack. Watch for a final melt-up squeeze into month-end rebalancing.

Six weeks ago software was left for dead: AI disruption, margin compression, model commoditization. Last week’s 14% rally in the IGV suggests the obituary was premature. Goldman’s software analyst now argues AI Natives are expanding the total addressable market rather than replacing incumbents, occupying the white space between SaaS silos. The squeeze phase may fade. The re-rating phase could just be starting.

Friday closes with the final UMich sentiment read and 5-10 year inflation expectations. Fed officials are in blackout ahead of next week’s FOMC. Every data point gets filtered through the rate-cut lens.

Speculative play: when a failed rocket mission can’t even crack an elevated share price, the pain trade usually sits above, not below. The iron fly is the interesting route here, those two short 120 calls finance the structure and neutralize theta burn until roughly 30 days before expiration. You get paid to wait, risk is defined, and post-failure IV is still bid. Size it small in case it rolls over from here.
